The Sunday Post #24: The Twilight Zone

Monday night. The room is dark except for the soft light from my Kindle Paperwhite. I swipe to turn the page of His Perfect Bride. A gasp escapes, and my pulse starts racing.

Slowly, my husband turns from his place of slumber.

“You should go to bed. You’re driving into work to impress your new boss tomorrow.”

“I know, but I can’t stop reading,” I say as my eyes continue to sweep across the screen.

With a sigh, he says, “You can stay up late tomorrow and read.”

Exasperated, I move the Kindle away from my face. “But the book is good now!”

I thought this would be the end of this type of discussion—that I had set the record straight. But he does not understand. He truly does not know.

On Tuesday, I’m enjoying the peaceful ride home in my car. I casually push the button to call my husband, wanting to discuss the news of the day.

Our conversation starts to languish, so I nonchalantly ask, “Did I get any books in the mail?”

“Do you really need more books?”

In my anguish at these words, my car starts to swerve. I quickly right the car, and silence falls until I finally tell him I’ll see him at home and push the button to end the call.

The week has been eerie, with these words from my husband still ringing in my ears. My heart misses a beat every time the words vibrate through.

Does my husband know me? Or is this the start of a dramatic turn in our marriage? One where quiet will be our friend, and the sound of silence will swirl around us for many years to come.

This week I read His Perfect Bride. I’ll be opening up the The Peacemaker this weekend. It feels like I’ve waited too long for book two in this series. Given that it’s an Amish read, I’m sure I’ll breeze through it. I’ll also start, and possibly finish, Written in Secret.

My husband doesn’t mind my reading in bed because he likes to lie on my lap so I can lightly scratch his head and put him to sleep with one hand while I hold the Kindle with the other. But sometimes I fall asleep and drop the Kindle on his head! He finally bought a Kindle case with a strap to wrap around my hand so that doesn’t happen. Except sometimes I fall asleep soundly enough that my hand and the Kindle drop on him! I just did it last night! I don’t know how he manages to fall asleep with that Sword of Damocles dangling over him but he does! :-)

I love the way you told that story, lol. As a single woman, never been married, my only issue is telling my dogs they need to scoot over or get out of my face so I can read my book, lol. Hope you have a good week!

It’s hard for our husbands to remember sometimes, I think. :-) Mine has to be careful because he knows that if he starts complaining about my books, I’ll have something to say about his manga and video games. LOL More often for us though, it goes something like this:

Him: It’s time for you to go to bed.

Me: Just let me finish the chapter.

Him: You can’t even keep your eyes open.

    Me: I’m almost there.

That’s how you know you are reading a good book, right? I hope you have a great week, Carla, and enjoy your reading!

My husband plays video games too. He gets sucked into that and totally forgets how long he’s been playing. Yes, that discussion is exactly how you know you’re reading a good book!

My husband reads so much and for years he read way more than me but I didn’t pay much attention. Now we are both into reading and sometimes sheepishly slide out a book we found at a free library or on sale somewhere. We rarely buy new ones, though. I have to really, really like the author to buy a new one.

The books I’m getting are all free from the author or publisher but it still bugs him.

My daughter loved to read as a child but doesn’t now. Neither of my sons did. Now only my oldest son does. But, my dad loved to read westerns and read every day, most of the time at noon and then at night. My mom read the Bible every day.

Don’t let the story fool you. My husband loves to read and reads more books a month than I do. It’s just that he gets his on Kindle or ebooks from the library. I don’t think any of our kids read much even though we always read with them when they were little.

My husband doesn’t understand my reading either, so don’t worry! I’m sure your marriage will be fine. 😅 Ironically, we met at a bookstore (we both worked there), so really I should be more surprised by how little he reads now. 😜

I’m not sure if/when I’ll read it since it was a Kindle freebie. I got it because it was so highly rated but the cover aesthetic is not what I normally go for.

My husband asked if I actually NEEDED to read 198 books last year. Um, yes. My friend Gill once gave me a box of books (destined for BookCrossing in the main) with “There are no books in here” written on it …!

I knew going into my marriage that my husband would never understand my love of books, and I’ve made peace with that. He teases me whenever I get a book in the mail but I know it’s all in good fun😁 I tease him for the amount of Amazon packages that come to him almost daily!

Here’s what’s funny, Tammy – he reads more than me! He exclusively uses Kindle though because he has very poor eyesight and even large print is too small for him. He does check out a lot of books at the library though.
