Monday night. The room is dark except for the soft light from my Kindle Paperwhite. I swipe to turn the page of His Perfect Bride. A gasp escapes, and my pulse starts racing.
Slowly, my husband turns from his place of slumber.
“You should go to bed. You’re driving into work to impress your new boss tomorrow.”
“I know, but I can’t stop reading,” I say as my eyes continue to sweep across the screen.
With a sigh, he says, “You can stay up late tomorrow and read.”
Exasperated, I move the Kindle away from my face. “But the book is good now!”
I thought this would be the end of this type of discussion—that I had set the record straight. But he does not understand. He truly does not know.
On Tuesday, I’m enjoying the peaceful ride home in my car. I casually push the button to call my husband, wanting to discuss the news of the day.
Our conversation starts to languish, so I nonchalantly ask, “Did I get any books in the mail?”
“Do you really need more books?”
In my anguish at these words, my car starts to swerve. I quickly right the car, and silence falls until I finally tell him I’ll see him at home and push the button to end the call.
The week has been eerie, with these words from my husband still ringing in my ears. My heart misses a beat every time the words vibrate through.
Does my husband know me? Or is this the start of a dramatic turn in our marriage? One where quiet will be our friend, and the sound of silence will swirl around us for many years to come.

This week I read His Perfect Bride. I’ll be opening up the The Peacemaker this weekend. It feels like I’ve waited too long for book two in this series. Given that it’s an Amish read, I’m sure I’ll breeze through it. I’ll also start, and possibly finish, Written in Secret.
