The Sunday Post #23: Working and Reading

How was your week? I’ve been working, and reading, and reading and working (sung to the tune of Wishin’ And Hopin’ by Dusty Springfield). And that’s about it, as you will see below. I’ve also been thinking about writing devotionals but I’m not sure yet. I’ve written Bible studies but a devotional is very different. I’m not sure that devotionals lend themselves to my wry sense of humor.

When I went back and looked at my notes, I read more then I thought this week. I finished The Novel Adventures of Natalie Daughtry, Small Town Harmony and An Overdue Match. I guess the extra day off did help. Tomorrow I plan to pick up His Perfect Bride. Since I took a day off this week, I’m also hoping to read The Peacemaker.

  • Written in Secret by Crystal Caudill came in from Kregel Publications. This is for a Blog/Review tour with  JustRead Publicity Tours in March.
  • I purchased the Falling For Franklin series by Hailey Gardiner. On February 8, 2025, Hailey (32) and her unborn child passed away during an emergency surgery. She left behind her husband and two small children. On February 20th it was deemed Hailey day and many purchased her books to help support her family. There are other ways to support her family if you are so inclined. There is a linktree with more information on her Instagram page.
  • The Texas Divided ebook came in from JustRead Publicity Tours. I’ll be doing an author interview in March.

My favorite magazine, Everyday Faith, just released. I just ordered my copy so I don’t have it yet but I didn’t want to wait to say something. Here is the description:

You’ll be reminded that no matter what you are facing and no matter what life brings your way, God is making all things new. An Overdue Match looks so fun! I have to open all my latest book purchases yet (they tend to pile up before I open them) but I think that was one I did preorder. :)

I think a bit of humor could make for a very good devotional – I think we sometimes get caught up in the idea that all things must be *serious,* but sometimes we need that humor to help us “get it”. Even Jesus told stories to help people understand :)

And I started An Overdue Match last night! So far I’m loving the unabashed book love <3

Thank you, Rebecca. That’s a helpful perspective. I loved An Overdue Match and went so far as to say it will now be the book by which I judge all contemporary romance. It is amazing!

I totally want to think about the five nonfiction books that changed my life. Hm.. How did you narrow it down to five?

They are the nonfiction books I still reference or reread if I feel like I’m slipping in those areas. I’ve read a ton of nonfiction but these are the five I go back to over and over.

I am glad you were able to support Hailey Gardiner’s family. I wanted to buy her books as well but it is not in the budget. I also enjoy reading Everyday Faith but I don’t get the opportunity to read it very often. I should see if my library has it or will get it. I am looking forward to eventually reading Written in Secret. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Just thinking about and praying for the family is something I’m sure they appreciate. My library gets very few magazines so I have to purchase Everyday Faith. I don’t always get it every quarter but I get it more often than not. I hope you’ve had a great week!

I know several people who would appreciate a devotional written with a wry sense of humor.

I like the idea of 5 Nonfiction Books that Changed Me. It would make a great subject for a future Top Ten Tuesday.

We’ll see if I ever do the devotional writing. Sometimes things just pop in my head and sit there for a long time before I get to them.

You can submit the idea if you want. I’m not sure if I can come up with more books though. So I’ll probably take another detour!

Welcome to Carla’s Book Crush where I share my favorite clean, Christian reads. I review everything from Amish and historical romance to suspense, contemporary fiction, nonfiction, and the occasional devotional. If it has heart, hope, and a message that points back to Christ, it’s probably on my shelf. I also love chatting with authors and featuring interviews that give you a peek behind the pages. Whether you’re looking for a new release, a cozy weekend read, or just something uplifting and well-written, you’re in the right place. Clean stories. Encouraging faith. Books worth reading.
