The Sunday Post #7: My Audiobook Conversion

I didn’t think it would happen. I never pictured myself as this person. And I thought that if it ever did happen, I would do it in secret, hiding the evidence like a thief in the night. But here I am, doing it and telling everyone: I read audiobooks. Yes, it’s true. There are so many books by my favorite authors that I’ve read in the past and want to review on the blog, but I don’t have time to reread them the traditional way. Now, I am rereading while on my walks and while knitting.

I still can’t read at work—I need total silence—nor do I think I am ready to read audiobooks that are fresh and new, but it’s a start. The only problem is, now I’m reading faster than I can write reviews. There are only so many hours in the day, and I really, really like my sleep.

This weekend is a quiet, “get caught up on blogging and reading” type of weekend. Therefore, I’m going to play a game called “Does my sister and best friend (the same person) read my blog?” If she does, she’ll call me when she sees this. I’ll let y’all know next week if I got the call because of this post or just because I’m the best big sister in the world.

This Week On The Blog

11/05/2024 Ten Amish Romances with Barns on the Cover: One would think finding ten Amish books with barns on the cover would be easy—until you try it. With the added challenge of not repeating authors, I nearly settled for “Ten Books with Words on the Cover.” So, why barns, and what made the final list? Read to find out.

11/7/2024 Book Review: Their Inseparable Bond by Jill Weatherholt: This is a great small town romance read. I received this one through BookSirens and while it’s a four star, I don’t know if I’ll get anymore from there. I really prefer NetGalley and working with JustRead! Publicity Tours.

11/8/2024 Book Review: Sisters by the Sea: This is my first audiobook reread. This is such a great book of novella’s all written by a Brunstetter but the books all go together. I love this one. So good!

11/10/2024 The Sunday Post: this is the only blog post that I send out via email. If you want to make sue you see what is going on with the blog, then be sure to subscribe.

New Arrivals

Taken at Christmas byJodie Bailey. I can’t resist a Love Inspired Suspense. The author is new to me. I’m looking forward to a new voice.

So Into You by Kathleen Fuller. Fuller is a favorite author of mine. I usually read her Amish romances. I’m looking forward to reading something more contemporary by her.

So glad you discovered the world of audiobooks. Then you’ll get to find your favorite narrators. I find that thrillers and somehow nonfiction work really well as audio.

In the past I’ve tried nonfiction and my mind tended to wander. It does the same with podcasts. Fiction seems to be holding my attention.

I discovered audiobooks four years ago and never looked back! But I can’t listen to them while working either!

I was starting to think I might be the only one who can’t listen while working. Maybe it’s job dependent.

I listen to audiobooks and fall behind on my reviews, too. I also sometimes have a hard time with reviews since I don’t have the physical copy of the book in my hands, but I still love listening.

Yesterday, I decided to start putting notes together after my walk (or wherever I’m reading) to help with reviews. I think that might work.

I adore audiobooks so I’m always excited when someone gives them a try :) What a great idea to re-read that way.

It’s been so helpful with putting the words of some of my favorite authors back in my mind.

All your books look good, especially Taken at Christmas. I downloaded Audible this past May and the rest is history lol. I listen mostly to audiobooks now and like you said, I’m listening faster than I can review. I’m on my 16th audiobook now. Happy week ahead!

I’m pretty excited about Taken at Christmas, my last Love Inspired Suspense was a five star read. I hope my expectations aren’t too high.

Oh, wow! I got audible with the Kindle I just bought. It’s free for three months but I’m not sure if I’ll keep it after that.

I always have an audiobook going for when I do chores, crafts, walking, gardening, etc. I’ve doubled the amount of reading with also reading audiobooks. I do read new ones, as well as rereads.

I might move to new reads as soon as I figure the best way to capture my notes and thoughts for reviews.

Well, I could do audio books, but it would be while I’m driving, which might prove dangerous! I’ve told people in the past, don’t talk to me while I’m cooking, for the same reason. Though I do talk on the phone while driving, not in tricky situations however.

I sometimes get to work and have no idea how I got there. And that’s before I started audiobooks!

I always have a physical book (paperback or ebook) going, plus an audiobook. I listened to 7 audiobooks in October, which is high for me, but I had more time to listen than normal. I hope you branch out to new books/narrators and that you love them!

So far I’ve had two different narrators. One I liked because she was great at using different tones/inflections for the various characters. The one I’m reading now speaks Pennsylvania Dutch very well so I’m enjoying that.

Hehe… I became an audiobook junkie too. I always have one audiobook going when I can’t physically read. I just switch up the genres. Right now I am listening to a thriller and reading a paranormal romance.

After I get done with my Amish rereads, which is going surprisingly fast, I might branch out. The beauty of the reread is if I do get distracted for a few minutes, I still know what’s going on.

I really want to get back to audio books. I used to listen to them when I was still working and commuting. After I retired, I listened while walking but I haven’t been walking lately. Due to health and weather reasons, I haven’t been able to but I hope to get back to it soon.

    Have a great week!

With daylight savings time today, I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to keep walking. It’s getting cold in STL and right now it’s dark at 4:30 pm. I have been listening when I cook too, that’s helpful.

I didn’t really think I liked audiobooks either until I found the right ones to listen to that my mind didn’t wander while listening. That still is an issue for me. I tend to only listen though in the car. When I used to walk at the park a lot by myself, I’d listen then too. But I’m not the biggest fan of the airpod earbud things. I tend to knock them out more than I did when I had the wired headphones. Even those that were small and fit in my ears are better then the ones with no wires. You’ve got some books I need to check out too! Have a great week!

I was born with a birth defect and have moderately severe hearing loss in both ears, during the pandemic I couldn’t read lips so I finally got hearing aids. They are pretty fancy ones and I can connect them to the Bluetooth on my phone. If I didn’t wear them, I’d probably still be saying no to audiobooks.

      Happy reading!

We’ve been traveling to visit the kiddo and then again for house hunting so my reading was way down. can finally get into a book now. I tried audio but I get distracted and find the readers inflections are not always how I would read them, so I just use a Kindle or a book. Just my preference.

That’s cool your library loans such neat things like games. Ours loans out tools such as shovels, hoes and also laptops, musical instruments. Libraries have come a long way!

I love looking at houses, even if I’m not buying one. I just went through four display homes yesterday. I hope you find what you want soon! The Amish books have been good so far. But since it’s a reread I don’t feel the need to concentrate too hard.

Libraries are more like community centers nowadays.

I was late to the game of audio books, too. I got started with celebrity memoirs, read by the author, because that is such a special experience. That’s still a favorite for audio books, but I’ve branched out some — especially if a blogger makes a point of recommending the audio book. I’ll often check it out to see what makes it special.

Oh! Celebrity memoirs is a good idea. It would be fun to hear it read by them. I would think the reading would contain more emotion.

I haven’t made the leap into audio books yet, though I got my first Kindle last Christmas and am enjoying ebooks more than I thought I would. My favorites are still the hard cover books and I always stock up at our library books sale twice a year. LOVE our local library!

I was a slow converter to ebooks as well. There’s just something about a physical book in your hands. Our library sale is next week and I’m hoping to stock up on some cookbooks and Amish romance.

Welcome to Carla’s Book Crush where I share my favorite clean, Christian reads. I review everything from Amish and historical romance to suspense, contemporary fiction, nonfiction, and the occasional devotional. If it has heart, hope, and a message that points back to Christ, it’s probably on my shelf. I also love chatting with authors and featuring interviews that give you a peek behind the pages. Whether you’re looking for a new release, a cozy weekend read, or just something uplifting and well-written, you’re in the right place. Clean stories. Encouraging faith. Books worth reading.
