Study the Bible with Confidence: The EASY Bible Study Method Review

Learning different study methods is one way I grow in understanding God’s Word. Today I am sharing The EASY Bible Study Method (this also happens to be the name of the book). It is an easy methodology and one where I remember what each of the letters in the acronym stands for. Let me tell you a little bit more about the book and the method behind it.

Bible study doesn’t have to be confusing—it just needs a simple method.

If you’ve ever opened your Bible and thought, “Where do I even start?” you’re not alone. Maybe you long to grow closer to God, but you get tripped up by unfamiliar names and ancient customs. Maybe you wonder how any of this applies to your life today.

The Coffee and Bible Time team—Ashley, Taylor, and Ellen—have been there.

Ashley (co-author) remembers sitting in church and realizing she didn’t truly understand the Bible like she thought she should. That moment sparked a deep desire to know God personally through His Word. It completely transformed her life and led to the inspiration behind this book.

Ashley, Taylor, and Ellen (aka Mentor Mama)—love Jesus and long to know Him more deeply. Over the past 10 years, they’ve helped more than two million women build a Bible study routine that’s simple, consistent, and life-giving.

That’s why they’ve created The Easy Bible Study Method — a practical, approachable Bible study workbook for women that teaches us how to study the Bible with confidence and clarity.

Their simple E.A.S.Y. framework:
– Enter the story
– Assess the main idea
– Seek God and His character
– Yearn for a heart change and deeper intimacy with Christ

You’ll build a meaningful daily quiet time that fits your busy life and encourages spiritual growth.

This Christian devotional workbook is perfect for personal study, small groups, or discipleship settings.

Stop feeling stuck. Start encountering God.

If you’re ready to understand God’s Word and let it transform your life, this method will become your roadmap to deeper faith.

I got this book because I’d already been using the EASY study guide for a couple of years. Since I do not watch the group’s YouTube channel, having the guide explained to me more thoroughly was extremely helpful. This book includes a QR code that takes you to an updated version of the guide, which is much more detailed. But you’ll still need to read the book to get the full context.

Typically I am one to highlight and underline quite a bit in a nonfiction book. This one is structured in a way that makes annotating unnecessary. Everything is broken down into bite sized chunks with clear color-coded headers. Callouts, lists, action items, and discussion questions provide detail in a simplified manner. If you find annotation enjoyable, this format may take some of the fun out of it for you. Maybe you’ll still find some good things to underline.

“As you go through this book, imagine we are getting together weekly at a coffee shop and teaching you how to study the Bible step by step in a very simple way. By the end of our time together, you will have the basic tools you need to study Scripture with the help of God’s Spirit who lives within you.”
p. 13

As the quote suggests, action steps are used to walk you through in a simple manner how to study the Bible using the EASY method. John 6 is used as the example throughout and if you do all of the action items, you will have a good understanding of the chapter when you are done. It will be like the authors are meeting with you to study because they also show their own insights at each step along the way.

Some downsides include not having clarity around the fact that not every step will be used every time. In particular, E – Enter Into the Story. This is where you get the background on the book of the Bible you are studying, who wrote it, who it is written to, and the context behind the writing (time period, purpose, etc.). There is a brief note in the beginning of the book, however, the guide does not mention this fact and is easy to forget since the E is a major part of the acronym.

It would also be helpful to see how the methodology would be used in different genres of the Bible like Psalms or Proverbs. They took the time to explain the different genres which is helpful. What is missing is how to use the study methodology on different genres. hey also didn’t spend enough time stating that you may not get through all of the steps each time. Not due to time, but because you just aren’t there yet. And that is okay. Your Bible study doesn’t have to be perfect or check off a list each time. It just needs to bring you closer to God.

Even though the book used John 6 as their example, it did not take any sort of denominational stance so I think it would be good for anyone of any Christian background. If you aren’t a Christian and want to learn more about why we believe what we do, the approach would be beneficial. It shows how everything is put together so it makes sense. Not everything this side of heaven will make total sense to us, God has saved some of the good stuff (and I imagine the best stuff) for us to learn later.

The authors encourage the use of outside resources in your understanding of the Bible. Not only does this allow you to find all the good study stuff (many are free!), it also allows you to start looking at what others are saying with discernment. Including what the others are saying in their insights. This brought some credibility to them because I personally did not see anything I disagreed with. As stated earlier though, it seems they took care in making sure this is about how to study the book, not their own personal doctrine.

The book does get at the heart of the matter, Bible study does not have to be hard. It can be easy. It also does the right thing and encourages you to study the Bible for yourself. While I enjoy the occasional, structured Bible study in a group, they often use a book which does all the work for you and then just asks you to do the application. Those types of Bible studies forget to remind the reader that the Bible is first and foremost a book about God, written to God’s people at a certain point in time, for a specific reason, and all of those things need to be taken into consideration. It’s not a book about you. For those flustered by this concept, I have been in the past, this book walks you through slowly and carefully how to begin to do the important groundwork of Bible study and not leave it to someone else.

This book would be great in a Bible study group. Having others to work through the book and reflect on the action items together could enhance how to use the methodology as well as learn more about the book of John. If you don’t have a group, this is still great as an independent workbook for Bible study beginners. Not only new Christians, but those who want to learn how to systematically study the Word of God.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Looking at this book again, and going through the concepts the book teaches one more time, gave me a true appreciation for this approach to Bible study. If you haven’t found the perfect methodology for you (hint: there’s not one), this book may give you new insights into how to approach your daily walk with God.

That looks so good, Carla. I’ve been reading the Bible for 40-some years, but it’s never too late to learn new ways to study it :)
