Author Q&A

CB: Hi Jennifer, I’m so glad you were able to take the time for this interview. Your new book Puppy Love & Snowflake Kisses sounds like such a sweet holiday story. I’m excited to hear more about your inspiration, your characters, and your writing journey.

JF: Hi. 😊 Thanks for having me. I’m so happy to be here. PUPPY LOVE & SNOWFLAKE KISSES truly is filled with holiday fuzzies and a little bit of mystery. It was so much fun to write.

CB: You were a finalist or winner in many contests before you were published. What inspired you to keep entering and how did those experiences shape you as a writer?

JF: I entered those contests before and after being published. It seems like so long ago now. I remember how much fun it was getting a call that I’d placed. Oh my, the memories. At first, I entered the contests to get feedback. Later on, I entered to get in front of agents and editors. I honestly don’t know how it shaped me as a writer. It was just one of the influences that made me the author I am today.

CB: Since you have cats at home, what made you decide to feature dogs in your Kringle Falls series instead?

JF: Sadly, last year one of my cats died. I fondly referred to her as Writer Kitty because she literally sat with me to write all of my books. She was almost twenty when she passed so as you can imagine, we were very close. After I lost her, the house was really quiet. Wild Child, our other cat, was mourning her and didn’t socialize or eat much during that period. So come Christmastime, the hubster suggested we get a puppy. For cat people, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Lol. Puppers turned our lives upside down. He pulled Wild Child out of his funk. Now Wild Child does whatever he can to get Puppers in trouble. It thoroughly amuses him. We’ve had Puppers for about ten months now and we’re finally finding a rhythm. So I guess you could say he’s my hands on research for the Kringle Falls series. Lol.

CB: Why did you choose to set this series during Christmas?

JF: Because it’s my favorite holiday. 😊 What could be better than puppies and Christmas? Hmm… Maybe kitties and Christmas?

CB: Do you have a favorite Christmas tradition that makes its way into your stories?

JF: I don’t know if I have one favorite tradition. It’s more like favorites traditions, as in plural. There’s baking cookies, trimming the tree and family dinners. There’s nothing better than spending time with the family.

CB: What makes Kringle Falls a special setting for you?

JF: Kringle Falls is a Christmas town. So most shops have holiday-inspired names and the town is decorated year-round. The mayor’s name is Kris Kringle. He has a white beard and a jolly laugh. And in the middle of the town there is a waterfall. At Christmastime they highlight the falls with colored spotlights.

CB: Do you see yourself in either Belle or Parker?

JF: No. Not really. I’ve written over sixty books now and I’ve learned to make the characters independent of me. Sometimes I agree with their actions. Sometimes I don’t. But the characters do what they want. I’ve learned not to argue with them. They know where we are headed. I don’t.

CB: Did anything surprise you while writing this story?

JF: Oh, yes. This story unfolded as I wrote it, which made it a lot of fun to write. Years ago I would plot my books before I wrote them, but I found time and again that my characters would go off script and do their own thing. It made all of my planning pointless. So I have a general idea of what is going to happen at the beginning of the book and then we take off. It makes writing a lot of fun and full of surprises.

CB: What message or theme do you hope readers take away from this book?

JF: That people aren’t always the way they seem. Sometimes you just have to get to know them to find what’s special about them.

CB: Do readers need to read book one first or can they start with  Puppy Love & Snowflake Kisses

JF: Each book in the Kringle Falls series is an independent read and has its own HEA. But reading the books in order will give readers a fuller read as they will understand the backstory of the other characters and the puppies.

CB: Before we finish, is there anything else you’d like readers to know about Puppy Love & Snowflake Kisses or the Kringle Falls series?

JF: The book is full of heart. It’s a small town Christmas romance where sparks fly between enemies. There’s a bit of a mystery when a dognapping occurs. As well as meddling townspeople, well-meaning family and friends. In the end, I hope it will make the readers’ hearts smile.

CB: Thank you so much, Jennifer, for taking the time to share about your book and your writing journey. It’s a joy to get to know you better. I know readers will be excited to pick up Puppy Love & Snowflake Kisses this holiday season.

JF: Thank you for having me. It was a lot of fun to chat!

I know! I’m just sorry that Jennifer had to lose her sweet writing companion for puppies to make their way into her life. Although I will leave the puppies to the rest of you. #teamkitten
