Release Date:  July 8, 2025

Peace.

The very word evokes images of serene landscapes and quiet stillness. In today’s chaotic world, peace is a valuable commodity. The Bible has a lot to say about peace, claiming that God himself is the ultimate source. In this follow-up to Names of God: Living Unafraid, Grace Fox reflects on how the following names of God point to the peace our souls so desperately crave:

Yahweh Shalom—The Lord Is Peace
Abba—Father
El Shaddai—God Almighty
El Roi—The God Who Sees Me
Yahweh Ori—The Lord Is My Light
Yahweh Nissi—The Lord Is My Banner
Immanuel—God with Us

Knowing Peace uses examples from Scripture and compelling real-life stories to illustrate how these names can bring inner peace amid life’s storms. Each session includes a guided prayer, reflection questions, and a video link providing additional insights from Grace. Perfect for individual or group study, this new addition to the Names of God series will encourage and inspire readers to draw near to God and receive his peace that passes understanding (Philippians 4:7).

Author Q&A

GF: You’re welcome! I’m honored that you’ve given me this opportunity!

CB: You’ve called your relationship with Jesus your guiding compass. Was there a specific moment or season that deeply shaped your faith journey?

GF: Oh, yes! I had a life-changing experience in my mid-20s. My husband and I were volunteering with a faith-based NGO in Nepal at the time, and our first two children were born there. The second, Stephanie, was born with a medical condition called hydrocephalus—too much water on the brain.

Doctors at the mission hospital where I delivered her by C-section told us that she needed a shunt in her head asap, but they couldn’t provide that service. We would have to return to North America on the first available flight.

Bad news—the airline refused to issue me a ticket when the agent learned that I’d had a C-section, saying they considered me to be a medical high risk. So, my husband returned to Seattle, Washington with our three-day-old daughter, and I was left behind for an additional eight days not knowing whether I would see her alive again.

After saying goodbye to Stephanie, I cried out to God and asked what He wanted me to learn through this experience. He spoke to me through the words of the hymn, “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” The lyrics reassured me that He would be faithful no matter what happened in our family’s future.

I clung to promises about God’s faithfulness as though my life depended on it. That’s when I realized the importance of basing our understanding of God’s character on truth, not on a perspective that’s skewed by culture or false teaching, or our own lens tainted by negative experiences. A misunderstanding of God’s character cannot anchor us when the storm winds blow.

Our world is growing more frightening by the day. Global storm winds are raging and picking up force. Only a correct understanding of who God is will hold us securely and give us peace when chaos surrounds us.

CB: You’re a wife, mom, grandma, missionary, and Bible teacher. How do you juggle all those roles and still find time to write, teach, and speak at events?

GF: Here’s my strategy: I keep first things first. My days begin with time in God’s Word before I do anything else. I guard that time not because I think I need to read the Bible out of duty as a “good Christian woman,” but out of joy. I consider this a date with Jesus. When He’s in first place, everything else falls into place.

Also, I acknowledge the Lord as master over my calendar. I trust Him to guide my steps because He knows what the future holds, when my family might need a hand, and what my responsibilities as a career missionary will look like month by month.

I regularly invite Him to clear my schedule from anything that He doesn’t think is necessary for me and to fill it with what He wants.

I’ve seen Him answer so many times that I no longer stress when plans change or don’t look like what I think they should. God seems to bless my priorities, for which I am grateful.

CB: You’ve written devotionals, Bible studies, and more. What inspired you to start writing Bible studies in particular?

GF: I wrote several devotionals before writing my first Christian living book— Moving from Fear to Freedom: A Woman’s Guide to Peace in Every Situation. Two years after its release, an international ministry asked me to develop a DVD-based Bible study to accompany it.

The thought scared me half to death. I know, I know—this was super-ironic, considering the title and topic. I prayed, “God, I haven’t got a clue how to do this. If You want it to happen, then You’ll have to bring the details together.” That’s exactly what He did. So—I didn’t start writing Bible studies because I felt inspired to do so. I began because others asked for the material, and God made it clear that’s what I was to do. I obeyed, and God used my obedience to bless many, many people.

I still write from obedience, but I also write out of sheer love for God’s Word and a passion to empower others to understand and apply it for life transformation.

CB: What does your Bible study writing process look like—from idea to finished study?

GF: It always begins with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to guide my thoughts and make me sensitive to His voice. When He brings an idea to mind, He often confirms it several times over the next while.

The work always begins by exploring Scripture to see what it says, reading other books on the same topic, and finding relevant quotes from godly leaders I respect. I ask God to show me which personal anecdotes fit best and where, and I acknowledge my dependency on Him to show me who I should interview for third-person stories.

In full transparency, I often struggle with the fear of inadequacy and failure on days when writing feels laborious. I must bring my thoughts into captivity and focus on the truth: Since God has called me to this task, He will enable me to do it.

I can pretty much expect to encounter spiritual warfare. It comes in many shapes and sizes: health issues, sleeplessness, car troubles, unexpected financial expenses, and family concerns. I’ve learned not to panic but to praise God instead, and that’s when I experience His power in new ways.

When I’ve finished writing the study and am happy with it, I submit it to my editor and managing editor. While my editor does her part in making my work shine, she also checks it for biblical and historical accuracy. Another editor who specializes in the Hebrew language doublechecks my writing to ensure my teaching is correct. The three of us go back and forth, making changes as needed until we’re all satisfied that the manuscript is the best it can be.

The cover is designed well before I’ve completed the manuscript, so a design team now takes the edited manuscript and develops the interior layout. It’s always a joy to see their ideas come into reality. I feel over-the-moon blessed to work with these highly gifted people.

CB: Other than the Bible are there resources that you use to be able to write a Bible study?

GF: Two of the resources I use are the Logos Bible Software and the BlueLetterBible.org. The Bible Project is also a great resource. I also read books on similar topics to mine to understand others’ perspectives, too.

CB: How do you decide which names or topics to highlight in a study like Names of God: Knowing Peace

GF: Most times, those details are birthed as a direct result of my personal daily Bible reading. My interest is piqued when I see a specific topic or theme mentioned repeatedly in a short period. I also pay attention to what people are struggling with and their felt needs – inner peace, for instance.

CB: The study includes guided prayer, reflection questions, and video content. Why was it important to include all those elements?

CB: How would you recommend someone work through each session, including how long they should spend with each name?

GF: Readers can do this study on their own, but they’ll learn more by sharing it with others. So, consider it as a seven-week group study. Every person reads the chapter and answers the questions on her own. Each chapter is broken into several sections, so you might read one section and answer one question per day. When the group meets, they can watch the video together (it takes about 10 minutes) and discuss it and their answers to the reflection questions. It’s an enlightening study but not labor-intensive.

CB: For someone feeling weary or anxious today, which name of God would you point them to first, and why?

GF: I’d point this person to El Roi—the God who sees me. Sooner or later, we all land in a place where we feel lonely, weary, or scared. Our human bent wants to escape that place because it’s difficult there, but knowing God sees us can bring peace. His nearness and attention can turn that difficult place into the space where we experience His presence, power, and peace.

CB: Lastly, what’s next for you—any upcoming projects or speaking events we should keep an eye out for?

GF: I’m doing media interviews for Knowing Peace while writing the third book in this series—Names of God: Growing Strong. I have several speaking engagements in September and October, and then I’ll head to Romania and Egypt for ministry in November.

CB: Thank you for indulging my curiosity! I can’t wait to fit this into my coffee and Bible time.
