The story of Kara Wolfe, a K-9 handler, and Beau O’Connor, a former Marine with prosopagnosia, held my attention and was a good, quick read. The fact that Kara’s deceased fiancé was Beau’s best friend—and that Beau had harbored secret feelings for Kara for many years—made the romance portion of the story satisfying. I love the “friends to more” trope. Learning about prosopagnosia (the inability to recognize faces) and how Beau was learning to manage this challenge was interesting. Mentink’s letter to the reader at the end touched on how God loves us and knows us by our hearts, not our appearance.

The suspense part, while well-written and engaging, was slightly formulaic, and I was able to pinpoint the characters committing the crimes right away. However, the motive was incredibly unclear, which kept me reading. That said, it made the ending feel anticlimactic.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy engaging suspense, K-9 units, and prefer a more subdued romance trope.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

The only thing more fun that writing about bloodhounds, is adding in some colorful new canine characters who aren’t quite your standard tracking champions. In this book, you’ll get to know Phil who was introduced at the end of book . He’s a livestock protector who steps in as a guide for Millie the bloodhound when her vision becomes impaired. Phil takes his job VERY seriously. He flat out refuses to wear a vest, or play with toys, and he doesn’t particularly like people, but he will lay his life down to protect Millie and Kara Wolfe. It was so much fun having this unlikely hero rise to the challenge as Kara and her ex-boyfriend must root out a saboteur on the local fish hatchery property. The secret they unearth will shock you, I hope! Please enjoy the adventure with Millie, Phil, and the rest of the Wolfe pack!

I don’t know that I really classify these types of books as mysteries. When I think of mysteries, I think more cozy like Nancy Drew. Yes, suspense does involve a mystery, but it’s so much more action-oriented.
