Author Q&A

Q: The fact that you wrote the original draft of A Star Appears at the age of 12 is fascinating. You noted that the final published book is drastically different from the original piece. What did your current voice tell you that required such a shift?

Dixon: The essence of the story remained the same but as I matured, my writing matured as well. It’s been quite an enjoyable adventure.

Q: You’ve stated on your blog that you “don’t shy away from Christian themes and truth despite modern society’s pressures.” How do you approach creating fantasy worlds that reflect biblical truths?

Dixon: In my fantasy world, there are two types of magic—Light Magic and Dark Magic. Light Magic is a gift from God (or, Elomé, as He’s known in Leíso). Not many have Light Magic. Dark Magic, on the other hand, was created by the Vile One (aka, Satan, in our world) as a means to oppose Light Magic. However, Dark Magic wears down the user over time and harms them. Symbols are what you might call gifts, somewhat similar to Light Magic. When a character has, say, a flame symbol then he is gifted with strength. Not like a superpower, but he can use his strength to help those who are physically weaker. If one abuses his symbol, it will disappear, forever.

Q: You’ve mentioned that some of your favorite books are The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, and Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder, among others. How have these authors impacted your writing?

Dixon: They all have something in common which I also incorporate in my stories—they all have the ability to perceive the deeper beauty in the world. In my book, when Riley meets Dorobonn, Dorobonn tells him that he (Riley) is one who has not lost his sense of fancy or imagination. Riley sees things that even his friend Caroline cannot see (at least, not initially). One of my favorite quotes by C.S. Lewis is, “Someday, you will be old enough to read fairytales again.”

Q: Do you have a favorite scene or moment in A Star Appears that was particularly meaningful to write?

Dixon: This one’s hard! Hahaha—I would probably say my favorite scene is when Riley is battling Iradocc, he gets trapped and starts to lose all confidence in himself. In defiance of Iradocc’s mockery, Riley gathers what little strength he has at that moment and escapes the trap. This whole scene leads up to an unexpected moment . . . 

Q: Which of your characters do you relate to the most?

Dixon: Hmm. I would say I relate most to Riley. He has a super active imagination and desires to help others. 

Q: What do you consider literary success?

Dixon: When an author is able to write the kind of book that he or she wants to see written.
