The Sunday Post #25: The Season of Lent

The Lenten season started on Wednesday, March 5th. Some Christians practice giving up something during Lent as a form of self-discipline and remembrance of what Jesus gave up for us. This is not a practice I regularly take part in, but I felt compelled to do so this year. It had been something I was thinking about, but my decision was reinforced when my husband asked what I was doing after church on Sunday.

I sighed and said that I had books to read and blog posts to write. He took my hands and said, “This is only a hobby.” Yes, a hobby that I have made too much of a priority in my life lately, forgoing other important things. I did not even make it to church Wednesday night.

Jesus sacrificed His life to atone for my sins, and continuing to prioritize worldly things over my faith feels like I’m turning my back on God. So this Lenten season, I am giving up requesting blog tours, books on NetGalley, and anything with a deadline. While I may not see the full impact of this decision during this season of prayer and fasting, it is a step toward putting my priorities in the right place. Hopefully, I will come out the other side smarter, wiser, and with a greater appreciation of God’s love.

This week I read The Peacemaker and Written in Secret. It’s no surprise that I got two books read since one of them was Amish fiction. I’ll be reading Written in the Deep this week and possibly The Farmer’s Marriage Bargain.

The Sunday Post #24: The Twilight Zone: Book Lovers, This One’s For You!

Monday night. The house is quiet, the Kindle glow is soft… and boomplot twist! My pulse is racing, my husband is sighing, and sleep? Nowhere in sight.

Tuesday. A casual call home. A simple question: Did I get any books in the mail? Cue dramatic music . My car swerves. My heart stops. Do I really need more books? HE ASKS.

Does he even know me?! Is this the beginning of a marital thriller… or just another chapter in my bookish obsession?

  • Everyday Faith: My magazine finally came in! I’ve started reading it and haven’t made quite the indent on it that I’d hoped. Aliza Latta has a touching article about great loss being used to create new beginnings.
  • Unwind: A Devotional Cookbook for the Harried & Hungry by Aarti Sequeira was also in the items I purchased. I’ll start on this devoational after I’m done reading Everyday Faith. There is a receipe for every devotion so in total their are 50 recipes. The book is beautiful and even though it’s hardcopy it seems to say open pretty well.

Book Launches:

  • The Mother’s Day Bargain I got this one from the author, Martha Fouts, as part of her book launch team. I’ve actually had it for a little bit but she requested that we not post about it until now.

Book Tours:

  • Kate Landry Has a Plan by Rebekah Millet came in from Bethany House Publishers for a JustRead Publicity Tours I’ll be reviewing this on March 27th.

Tell me something good.

I hope your book famine will help you to gain perspective, Carla. I know how easy it is to get lost in a fictional life.

I like this idea! A church I used to attend would start every year with a period of fasting in January (instead of Lent). One year I felt compelled to fast from reading fiction – and only read my Bible or select nonfiction … it was incredibly fulfilling and revelatory for me. I hope this break from deadlines/requests helps you “reset” as well <3

Yes!! My mom has asked me a couple of times if I get paid to read and review these books. And, obviously I don’t. So, her reminding me of that is helping me to not get so many. Also, I’m learning that financial cost isn’t everything. Yes, I may have to pay to read the books if I don’t get them as arcs, but getting the arcs isn’t “free” since it takes hours to read the books and there is time spent creating the posts for social media and getting the reviews uploaded and sending the links off.

Well said! I still want ARCs but I’m not sure that I’ll commit to street teams or whatever they want to call it again. The authors (or their assistants) all for too much. Reading and reviewing is fine (although to your point, that does take hours) but all of the other commitments that go along with street teams are way too much.

You always read such interesting books.

I like your idea of what to give up for Lent. I don’t really practice Lent either but this year I decided I would give up looking at news sites. I am not sure that’s really a sacrifice because I want to do it. I like the idea of giving up things like worrying about posting on Instagram or pushing for sales for my book instead. I need to carve out more time for devotions and I think this would really help.

Thank you, Lisa. I still don’t have as much time to balance out my life as I’d hoped because of my previous commitments but I’m sure I’ll see the light at the end of the tunnel soon.

Good for you in giving up something important to you as a sacrifice for Lent. It is important to focus our attention on the most important things, I believe.

    Enjoy your books!

Great idea to give up the blog deadlines for Lent. I’m always trying to give up blog deadlines but it’s never easy for me. Your husband sounds like mine. LOL Have a great week!

Unfortunately, I have a ton of deadlines during Lent but going. 46 days without signing up for new ones should leave me feeling more balanced come June.

I love your Lenten book sacrifice and it gave me a good reason to stop borrowing new NG books! I won’t even browse as that would be too hard to do. Good luck with your resolution.

Yes, I lurked the hard way not to browse. I saw a Love Inspired book and it was too tempting. I won’t be taking any peeks going forward.

What an inspiration you are, Carla! I applaud your decision to lessen the demands and deadlines and put God first :) The devotional cookbook intrigues me. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a combination devotionals/recipes done in a book. Will definitely keep that one in mind.

I’m pretty excited about the cookbook/devotional. Even though I eat very limited meat products, it seems like there are a lot of recipes that I can use. I’m also anxious to see how she ties the two things together.

I like the deadline aspect you gave up for Lent! What a great idea! I keep saying I’m going to take less review books and read what I already have. I’m getting better, but not completely! Hope you have a good week!

I really adjusted what I request on NG now – trying to be more intentional and keeping light reads but not totally empty-looking ones. I hope your Lenten plan goes well.

That’s a good idea to give up blog deadlines for Lent. I used to give up chocolate for years for Lent then I started giving up stressing. It’s a good reminder to focus my energy on what’s important.

Welcome to Carla’s Book Crush where I share my favorite clean, Christian reads. I review everything from Amish and historical romance to suspense, contemporary fiction, nonfiction, and the occasional devotional. If it has heart, hope, and a message that points back to Christ, it’s probably on my shelf. I also love chatting with authors and featuring interviews that give you a peek behind the pages. Whether you’re looking for a new release, a cozy weekend read, or just something uplifting and well-written, you’re in the right place. Clean stories. Encouraging faith. Books worth reading.
