January 2025 Wrap Up: Christian Reading and Book Reviews

Half-way through January and I’m just now making the time to get my January wrap-up, well, wrapped up. So without further ado….

I read a total of eight (8) books. This is a good number for me as my average is six books a month. I was off work for a little over two weeks so that allowed for plenty of extra reading time. Of those, one (1) was paperback and seven (7) were eBooks.

The links below are either to the review on the blog or Goodreads. You can also find most of the reviews on my Bookstagram account. If there is not a link the review is pending and hopefully I’ll get to it soon.

This is something I never thought I’d do, I shut a book in the first chapter and wrote the author an apology note but let her know I wasn’t going to read it. I’m choosing not to state the book or the author because what I did read was very well written and engaging. It was just not as clean as I like my books. She did advertise it as a fade to black book but I wasn’t expecting the amount of raciness in it from page one. It made me go back and update my Closed Door Romance Bookstagrammer Form to a clean and wholesome category of 1. Just my personal preference.

I also had a second DNF for a book that just wasn’t my cup of tea. Again, I don’t wish to post the author or the book just because it was not a book I found enjoyable. If there were something inherently wrong with either of these books, I would include that information but that was not the case with either of these.

I’m still not paying attention to SEO but each month my pageviews increase. January pageviews were 1,412. This brings the average monthly total to 737 pageviews per month. This is an important number when applying for book tours so I need to track it if I want all the best books.

The top five posts by page views are:

  1. Ambush on the Ranch by Tina Wheeler: Author Interview & Giveaway 230 views
  2. My Most Anticipated New Releases: January–June 2025 125 views
  3. Forget Me Not by Juliann Dove: Book Spotlight & Giveaway 125 views
  4. The Hunted Heir by Jayna Breigh: Book Review & Giveaway 98 views
  5. 2025 Bookish Goals 84 views

I’m slowly losing interest in Bookstagram and just using it as a place for some book tours but to also highlight things here on the blog. It’s too much work to keep both the blog and Instagram going when I have a full-time job. I prefer blogging so I’m trying to put in more effort here. With that being said, Instagram continues to grow despite my dialing back the effort. We’ll see if that holds true in February as I continue to back-off Insta more and more.

Instagram referrals to the blog increased to 11. Still slow-going for the referrals but better than Pinterest. Of course, I’m horrible at remembering to put my posts there.

I did not make any progress in knitting. I’m working on larger projects which is typical for me. I’ve also given up on crochet for the time-being. With two projects on my needles an all the reading I am doing, I’m feeling a little overwhelmed right now. I’m not sure when things will improve on this front but I’m trying to get to a point where all my hobbies (reading, blogging, fiber arts) are more balanced.

  • Knit: 1 – just a typical wash cloth. We always need those.
  • Crochet: 0
  • Loom: 0
  • Other: 0

Well, that’s a wrap on this wrap…up. Happy reading!

How was your January?

I don’t post reviews for novellas which are less than 100 pages or DNFs – although if it’s a galley I will struggle through. Have a great weekend!

I promised that I would review the novella so I felt it was important to post wherever I normally do.

I don’t post my DNFs either. I want to hype the books I loved, not the ones that were not for me. I get that. You did have a good amount of five star books which is excellent.

For the most part I can tell what I’ll really enjoy which is why I have so many five star reads.

I totally understand not sharing about your DNFs! I only do it because I like to see when I’m having trouble with a book if anyone else had trouble for the same reasons, it makes me feel not so bad sometimes for DNFing. I never say the book is bad, I just say why it didn’t work for me. Here’s hoping that February is going more smoothly for you not running into books that don’t work for you.

That’s a good thought about why you should share a DNF. So far so good for February!

I am a big fan of DNFing books that don’t work for me, but then I also do not request / accept books for review, either. I think that it sounds like you made the right choice to stop reading if the book was spicier than you wanted to read.

That’s the thing, I really thought these would be books I’d enjoy. I’m usually very good at judging what I’ll like. It was disheartening that I made two missteps this early in the year. It was unfortunate about the read that was to spicy for me, you could see that she’s a really good writter.

It can be really hard to judge spice levels, I’ve found. Hopefully that author will write something that fits the spice level you prefer at some point so that you can read that book instead!

I have an OK tolerance for “rudeness” but I occasionally make a poor choice and get something where I have to turn the pages very quickly – I never find out early though, it’s always when I’m half-way through and invested! I will mention if something is particularly racy. I am annoyed by Instagram because there are no live links, so I’m not able to tell who comes to my blog from there. But I started posting a picture of every book I read on there last year and now I can’t stop …

Yet would be difficult to stop halfway through. I can’t tell who the actual visitor is either but that’s okay. I’m putting all my reads on there too. Different people like different modes of communication. Honestly though, if I didn’t have such a good group of friends there, I’d probably slow down on IG even more.

I love that you included the Yarn Tales section in the wrap-up! I’ve been tinkering with my monthly review, expanding it from just listing the books read – I may have to include a crafty/yarn update as well, especially with my book blanket year-long crochet project :)

I think that it would be fun to see your book blanket updates in your wrap up, Rebecca.

Welcome to Carla’s Book Crush where I share my favorite clean, Christian reads. I review everything from Amish and historical romance to suspense, contemporary fiction, nonfiction, and the occasional devotional. If it has heart, hope, and a message that points back to Christ, it’s probably on my shelf. I also love chatting with authors and featuring interviews that give you a peek behind the pages. Whether you’re looking for a new release, a cozy weekend read, or just something uplifting and well-written, you’re in the right place. Clean stories. Encouraging faith. Books worth reading.
