Desperate to avoid the turmoil that now engulfs her, Dee would do anything for a chance to turn back time. Wracked with regret and paralyzed by fear, she is forced to hide halfway across the world, all in a bid to safeguard the one person she holds most dear. If only she could undo the past and prevent this disastrous situation from ever unfolding.

After waiting five long years, Luke thought he was finally making progress in his relationship with Dee. But just as she begins to open up and trust him, she suddenly vanishes, leaving him bewildered and determined to uncover the truth behind her sudden disappearance.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Dee thought she and Mark would eventually marry, so she never questioned his late nights or frequent absences. Mark believes she should submit to him, using manipulation and threats to keep control. It all comes out in the open when Mark wields his power in public. Fearing for her loved ones, Dee disappears to a foreign country, and when Luke—who has secretly loved her for years—realizes she’s gone, he’ll stop at nothing to bring her home.

This book had me hooked immediately. Mostly because I wanted to shake some sense into Dee. Mark is beyond a psychopath and Dee is very clearly an abused woman. As is proven by Mark’s treatment of her after Dee finally comes to her senses and tries to rid herself of Mark. Luke, a soldier, is a wonderful and caring man and the polar opposite of Mark. But Dee pushes him away because she is afraid of relationships and feels she needs to protect Luke from Mark. Dee felt responsible for everything that happened around her, even though she had no control over the actions of others.

The book brought up images of redemption, being a martyr for Christ, and learning the hard way how God’s love can set you free. Dee was well-written. It was easy to see how Dee’s relationship with Mark impacted her emotionally. Dee seemed to think her issues were with her family and it was this thinking that got her into such a poor relationship. I especially enjoyed Luke’s character. He is a man of conviction and does not waver from his truth or love of God. He makes me want a better relationship with God too.

The thing that got me was the end. This book cried out for an epilogue of six months to a year later. Even though my Kindle said 100%, I kept swiping thinking, “Surely this isn’t it”. Don’t get me wrong, the ending was good. I just wanted more. That’s how good this is. Anyone who enjoys romance with a high level of suspense, or those who appreciate a strong Christian theme, will enjoy this book.

Trigger Warning: domestic emotional abuse, non-graphic violence, non-descriptive rape, kidnapping/torture, and death. If I had known about this, I most likely would not have read it but for me, it turned out not to be an issue and I am so glad I read the book.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author.

I am trying to mention trigger warnings. As someone with PTSD, I think it’s important.
