2025 Bookish Goals

I never thought I’d participate in challenges because I don’t want that type of pressure. But as this post was coming up, I realized that I’m doing some of these things anyway so I may as well see what challenges are out there that already coincide with the way I currently read. Plus a lot of the bloggers out there are making me sociable. What’s with that? So here are some of the bookish challenges, I’ll be participating in. I’ve added it all to my fancy spreadsheet and I’m ready to track!

  1. The all too simple one – GoodReads goal. This year I’m setting my sights on 72 books. My average is about six a month so that’s what I went with. If I make it too hard on myself, I’ll just chuck reading and probably the blog out the door.
  1. 2025 Audiobook Challenge, I’ve joined this one because I’ve found that I enjoy audiobooks when I’m out on my walks. I also like that there are only two linkups. It’s too cold for walking outside. The other bonus is that you can choose your level. I’m going for Weekend Warrior (I’m getting the hang of this) with a goal of 5-10 audiobooks. Sometimes I use my walking time to catch up with my sister and I just can’t talk on the phone and read at the same time.
  1. Beat the Backlist. This one only seemed logical. I have over 100 books on my Kindle and nine physical books that were all published in 2024 or earlier. Since I’m challenging myself to six books per month, I’d like to make one of them a backlist book, totaling 12 for the year..
  1. The TBR 25 in ’25 Challenge. This one is a cross-over from the one above. It’s also a real challenge. I’m not going to sweat it if I don’t make it since my real goal is 12 but I thought I’d just toss my hat in the ring and see what happens.
  1. The Bookish Books Reading Challenge. I love reading books about books! I have one sitting in NetGalley to read already. This is another low-key, choose your own level challenge so I’m going with Toe in the Door: 1-10 books read. I just don’t know how many books like this I typically read. I can always adjust if needed.
  1. 2025 Cover Lovers Reading Challenge. Because I do judge books by their cover – this is perfect for me! I’m honestly most excited for this one. Originally, I was going to go with a level one goal but since I’ve already been able to get two of these (as of 1/4/2025) so I’m going to challenge myself to level 2: 11-20 books.
  1. Historical Fiction Reading Challenge for 2025. Because I love historical romance, this challenge spoke to me. I also love that I’ll get some great recommendations from others. I’m going to shoot for Renaissance Reader at 10 books for the year. I already have three paperbacks on my shelves and I know that there are more on my Kindle.

These are challenges that I personally think would be good but apparently no one else does. Or at least not that I can find.

  1. Amish romance reading challenge. Let’s just declare me the winner. I’ll accept this honor on behalf of all the authors, readers, and Amish people out there. You have my heart. Actually, in all honesty, I think my friend Ruth reads even more Amish romance than I do. *Picks up heavy trophy and hands it over with tears in her eyes.* But in all seriousness, my goal is to read 52 Amish romances. Yes, that’s the bulk of my entire reading goal but I think it’s fitting.
  1. Reviews completed. Seriously, just because we’re reading them, doesn’t mean we’re always reviewing them. I could slap a star rating on GoodReads and call it a day. I still haven’t written the review for Christmas at Sugar Plum Manor and it’s a four star read. I’m really working harder at doing reviews in a timely manner this year.
  1. New author challenge. Okay, I believe there are some out there but I don’t do bingo’s, prompts where you have to read something in a certain month, or challenges that include classics. Let’s just say that I’m going to read 24 new-to-me authors this year.

Right now, I’m pretty excited about my low-key, keeping within my comfort zone goals. I just don’t think that 2025 is the year for stretching myself. Especially with so many fiber arts goals.

Are you joining any of these challenges?

Thank you to The Artsy Reader Girl for hosting Top Ten Tuesday!

I’m participating on several challenges including Goodreads, the audiobook challenge, Beat the Backlist, and Library Love. I wish you much success on your 2025 challenges and don’t they award a silver medal for Amish Romances? 🥈

Lots of great challenges! You could create your own Amish Romance challenge. I wouldn’t be surprised if there isn’t one on StoryGraph too. Good luck with your goals!

Good luck with all of these challenges, we have several overlapping. Oh, I love how you listed some that you would like, but don’t see. You should create one! I will say.. there is a Review challenge that I did last year and I’m doing this year. It’s on Bookstagram though. You submit your reviews for points and can win a prize at the end of the year. It’s so nice though because it does force me to actually review more!

It’s fine to hear about other people doing the same challenges as me. I hope you’re successful with them! I honestly haven’t seen any challenges on Books Instagram but maybe I’m not looking for them hard enough. I do like the idea of the review challenge though it’s good for everyone, including the authors. Have a great week!

I think it was easier because once you start one.. they have an open chat for the whole year. So there’s a lot of chatter and people talk about other’s they are doing! It’s so much fun though!! If you would like, I can send you the info for the review one. Thank you, you too!

Carla – these are all such great goals to have. I keep seeing the Beat the Backlist Challenge and I’m thinking I might have to look into that a little more, since I have a serious problem with backlist accumulating.

“If I make it too hard on myself, I’ll just chuck reading and probably the blog out the door.” — SAME. It can be hard to find a balance between just listing all the stuff you want to do vs. being realistic about the stuff you can do, right?

Ver hard! That’s why I only agreed to challenges that suit my current reading rhythms. I’m unlikely to check on the status of these goals more than twice this year. Just don’t want the pressure.

If you haven’t read any Amish romances before, I highly recommend Shooting Sunshine. It has a very contemporary writing style and is humorous.

Your 2025 bookish goals sound fantastic, Carla! It’s great that you’re finding challenges that align with your current reading habits. I love your approach to tackling the backlist and giving yourself the flexibility to enjoy reading without added pressure. Writing timely reviews is a challenge to me because I tend to binge-read.

I do understand binge reading. I’m finishing up my third book this week now and I’ve yet to write reviews on them. Maybe today.

I love reading challenges (obviously), but I don’t let them stress me out. If I finish them, I finish them; if I don’t, no big deal. I’m glad you’ve signed on for both of mine. They’ll be fun and there’s seriously no pressure at all.

Those are good ideas for new reading challenges. You can always host one yourself. You might not get much interest on the Amish one, but the others would probably be interesting to other bloggers.

Good luck with all your goals and Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

I love reading challenges. I don’t always complete them, but I make a good effort :) I don’t put any pressure on myself about challenges. I didn’t know about the Beat the Backlist challenge. I like the idea of that. I might join in. Good luck with your challenges.

I like your approach! :) It is very easy to get excited about all the challenges out there, and then quickly morph into very overwhelmed – but I like the way you’ve done it.

Quick idea on incorporating reviews: I used to write really long reviews for every book I read {for my first book blog, many moons ago}, and it got so overwhelming after a while, I kinda got tired of reading because I felt like I had to. But then after years of just sticking star ratings in Goodreads, I missed that other record and started jotting down little reviews – like a few sentences. It’s helped me transition back into longer form reviews on occasion.

    1. Carla Bruns Avatar

Thanks for the support, Rebecca. I think I may have a middle ground. If I focus on how the book makes me feel then I’m good but if I try to do something else it feels entirely laborious. Even if I jot a few sentences, I think that’s better than nothing. Or at least I hope so.

These sound like some great goals! I’m also doing a few of them (Backlist Reader and 25 in 25) but I agree about wanting something to help track “new to me” authors! I track them on my reading spreadsheet, but I don’t get to check off challenge boxes that way. ;-) Happy reading!

I also find it too easy to just a slap a GR star rating on something and call it good sometimes!

    1. Carla Bruns Avatar

I’m okay going back and doing a review within a few weeks but after that, I won’t recollect a thing. It’ll just sit there with its star rating and I’ll never remember why.

All great goals, Carla! I love that you have the Amish reading trophy, LOL! Once upon a time I would have been stiff competition, but I don’t read quite as many as I used to. My goals all mix well with each other, but in 2023 I WAY over did it and didn’t do ANY challenges (except my reading on Goodreads) in 2024. This year is hopefully a bit more balanced ;)

I hope you find the balance, Cindy! I’m not going to let the challenges alter my reading in any way. If I achieve them, that’s great. If I don’t, that’s okay too.

Wow seems there’s a challenge for everyone in the book world! Some of those look fun. I only formally do the Goodreads Challenge. I’ve tried some other challenges, like the 50 books/50 states and the Alphabet Challenge but found I was reading some books I didn’t really enjoy just to collect a state or a letter. I never did find a books set in Utah or anything I wanted to read that had a title starting with X, lol. I get most of my books from the library books sale, and I ALWAYS judge them by their covers! I have a new contemporary Christian romance coming out this year, Superheroes. No release date yet, but I think you’d like it. If you don’t find your 24 New-to-You authors I’d love to send the ARC when I get it if it looks good to you. If not, no worries :)

I am not a fan of challenges that require you to travel to every state, the alphabet challenge, etc. because I read such a limited genre of books those just don’t work. I mean, most Amish books are set in Pennsylvania or Ohio. LOL! I wondered what Superheroes was going to be when I saw you mentioned it. I’d love to read it!

Thanks Carla, I appreciate it so much. It is not Amish, but a (I think) beautiful Christian romance about ordinary people and the transforming power of love. I am super excited about Superheroes!
