2025 Fiber Arts Goals

I just spent the last hour and a half, frogging an entire blanket, untangling and winding yarn, and cleaning up my office/craft room. I’ve never felt better. It has me thinking about what my fiber art goals are for 2025. I don’t think any of them are too lofty but we’ll see how the year goals. In no particular order here they are.

  1. Use my cotton yarn stash (a.k.a, dishcloth yarn) before I purchase anymore. I don’t think this will be too difficult because knitting dishcloths is my go to for so many things. I knit them during work meetings (as long as I’m not leading), when I’m not sure what to knit next, when I have company over, and whenever I hear someone say they need more dishcloths. Because of this, I tend to buy a lot of cotton yarn plus I was gifted a bunch by my cousin after my aunt and uncle passed away. Side note, I found my Aunt Brenda’s recipe for knitted dishcloths among the yarn and even though it’s already my go to pattern I keep it because it reminds me of her.
  2. Knit a blanket or throw. I have a bunch of yarn that I purchased that I intended for this purpose but have yet to actually knit it. Mostly because I was working on the throw that I frogged. I’ve selected the Chevron Knit Throw from Yarnspirations and have cast on. It’s honestly not going to use everything so I’ll still have yarn for another throw. Or two.
  3. Knit four hats. Why this specific amount? Because it’s the number of skeins of yarn that I got from the blanket that I ditched. This may seem crazy but the yarn I had purchased was hand dyed and the variations in the color were way too extreme despite the fact that the dyer intended them to be the same based on the labeling. I think I will be much happier with the yarn in hat form because it won’t matter that the colors are so off.
  4. Learn to knit fingerless gloves. I have some beautiful yarn that I intended for this and have not made this effort yet. The Basic Fingerless Mitts pattern by Sue Brady seems to fit the bill.
  5. Knit one sweater. This is also new for me but I think if I can figure out fingerless gloves, I can certainly figure out a sweater. Or maybe I’m just being crazy. At any rate, Ashley Lillis has a great tutorial that I’m able to follow for her Winter Bluff Pullover. How do I know? Because I started it and then frogged it because I set it down too long and had no idea where I was at.
  1. Cut my loom stash down to half. I have plenty of cotton loops for potholders and I enjoy making them but I cannot in good conscience buy more loops unless I use at least half of what I have. Everyone should expect potholders for all federal holidays and birthdays.
  2. Learn to crochet something. Anything. Okay, really I want to crochet the Taylor Swift Chief’s 87 Beanie. I have the pattern, well since it first came out, but have not figured out crochet yet. For the record, I’m not a Swiftie, my husband is. Despite my lectures about him being too old for that. Apparently, there is no age limit.
  3. If I do all of the above, I will be able to cut my yarn stash down to almost nothing which means I can, you know, purchase more yarn. This is very important because I want to go to the 2025 Midwest Fiber Festival in April. I’m pretty sure that yarn will follow me home like a stray cat looking for food. And, no, I will not have made much of a dent on my stash by then.
  4. Actually use Ravelry to track my projects and make notations. So that I don’t have to frog unfinished sweaters because I can’t remember where I’m at.
  5. Try not to frog so many projects and stop being a perfectionist. Okay, that’s just a little knitting humor.

These sound like some great goals! If you can knit hats, then I definitely think you can knit fingerless mitts and sweaters. They might take a little more focus at first, but you’ve got this! Happy new year! (Or, as I saw someone else say on social media, happy new yarn!)

I can crochet but don’t have a clue on how to knit. I learned by watching this video series: https://youtu.be/GcOzdAzmtNM?si=tAOECV0YtuGQoD8k

Thank you for the link. The Bella Coco tutorials are the only ones that have come close to teaching me to crochet. I just have to stick with it.

Happy knitting and good luck with your goals! This is a great post idea. How nice that you use your aunt’s dishcloth pattern. I have two knitted cotton dishcloths stored in my yarn closet that were gifted to me nearly 2 decades ago by a friend’s grandmother. You should definitely make the Swiftie beanie! I only know the basic knit stitches like purl stitch but the times I’ve tried to knit, I always just want to get back to my crochet. I do Tunisian crochet though which is like a mashup of both knit and crochet.

I like cleaning up my yarn closet/craft area too. It also reminds me of what yarns I have in my stash.

Oh, my,gosh! Tunisian crochet is on my “in my wildest dreams” list. I think I need to figure out crochet first. I don’t keep as much yarn as some but it seems like a waste of money not to use what I have first.

Knitting was always something I wanted to do. My grandmother always wanted to teach me, but I was a kid who didn’t want to be bothered. Now, all my time seems to be with reading and blogging. I do like to do cross stitch but I haven’t even had time for that lately.

Your goals sound lovely. Good luck with them.

My aunt tried teaching me to crochet and knit when I was a kid but I didn’t catch on. I taught myself during Covid using YouTube. Reading and blogging does take up a lot of time! I’m working to manage it all.

What fun and wonderful goals! I used to love to knit and crochet, but my arthritis and carpel tunnel ended that. I am eager to see all your updates throughout the year.

I don’t knit that fast or that much at one time because it will start to hurt my hands. Also looking down too much upsets the arthritis in my neck. I’m looking forward to sharing my knitting!

It’s got to be a great feeling to have your craft room neat and tidy and your goals all set in place. Now you can start the new year in an orderly, organized space. I would like to knit but I can’t seem to catch onto it. I know a lady who makes sweaters and they are to die for! I like to crochet but only make baby blankets, lol. I also love jigsaw puzzles, plants and gardening, trying new recipes (especially desserts!) and I am always working on a writing project of some kind. Wish there was time for everything but sadly there is not. It’s these ventures that feed our creative souls :) Will look forward to pics of your creations. .

Some of the knitters are just mesmerizing. The things they can do are amazing! I prefer flatter things like blankets so I get that. The exception is hats which is why I think I might enjoy knitting socks and sweaters. You have all kinds of wonderful hobbies!

I love to bake, but try and give a lot of it away. I also sew, but with my grandkids getting older, they don’t want handmade clothes anymore. Of course in nice weather, I’m a swimmer/water jogger/aquafitter. Good luck with your goals, they sound like good ones and achievable. BTW, what does frogging mean?

I would love to be able to sew! It’s such a practical and fun skill. I do enjoy swimming as well. Or maybe it’s just floating around on the water. Frogging is when you start over because you have to “ripit, ripit”. Like a frog, “ripit, ripit.” Apparently some fiber artist had an odd sense of humor and we all picked it up.
