Devon Fairchild travels to the tiny town of Maple Glen, where she is to fulfill a promise to her deceased brother. Devon is determined to fulfill this promise, even if it means hiking on a trail in the winter, despite warnings from the owner of the B&B where she was staying. Luckily for Devon, when she has an accident, a local firefighter and search-and-rescue volunteer, Finn McAllister, happens upon her.
It’s a little mysterious why Devon made the promise to her brother. Which is intriguing and plays into Devon’s character. She is reserved and distant and you know there is a reason why but you just don’t know. Well, eventually you do, but I don’t want to spoil it for you. Finn, a name I adore, by the way, is more of an open-book type. Or at least his thoughts are because this is a dual-point-of-view book. My favorite! Sometimes, he seems almost a little too perfect but at the same time overbearing. Although, I don’t think that’s the way Finn sees himself.
There are a few townspeople in Maple Glen that get involved with what is going on with, well everything. It is a small town. But Carter made it very easy to keep up with the characters. Other than Finn’s direct family, the other characters played minor roles and you never needed a cheat sheet of characters. Everything was well laid out. I really enjoyed Finn’s mother, Marion. She is the reserved but knowing type. And she likes to cook, bake, and get involved in helping the community. A woman after my own heart.
As Devon stays in Maple Glen, you can start to see her resolve start to slowly melt. Both she and Finn start to transform in the tiniest of ways. Just enough to keep the book grounded in reality. This change in Devon made for some wonderful and unexpected dialogue towards the end of the book. All of this culminated in giving the book just the right ending. One that made sense and put a smile on your face.
This book is just right for those who enjoy small-town romance, found family, and forced proximity. A touching romance with a sweet ending.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author.
All opinions are my own.
