Ten Amish Romances Set in Ohio

According to Amish America, Holmes County, Ohio, is the second-largest Amish community in the U.S. It also has one of the most diverse set of Amish groups, including the Beachy Amish and New Order Amish which are two of my favorite groups to have incorporated into my Amish romances. Based on what I know through research these two groups speak to my desire to be disconnected from modern conveniences but not so far off the grid that they are unaware of the world around them.

Perhaps one day, I’ll be able to meet some people from those communities and learn a little bit more on a personal level. I’d also love to pick up some knitting tips, so if anyone has suggestions—Amish or not—please leave them in the comments.

In the meantime I’ll let the authors of these wonderful novels paint pictures in my mind. If you also want a glimpse of Ohio’s Amish country, here are 10 books you can add to your TBR.

When the Morning Comes by Cindy Woodsmall

Her relationship with fiancé Paul Waddell in tatters, Hannah Lapp has fled her secluded Old Order Amish community in hopes of finding a new home in Ohio with her shunned aunt. Hampered by limited education and hiding her true identity, Hannah struggles to navigate the confusing world of the Englischers.

Back in Owl’s Perch, Pennsylvania, Paul is wracked with regret over his treatment of Hannah. Fearing for her safety, he tries to convince Hannah’s remaining allies–brother Luke, best friend Mary, and loyal Matthew Esh–to help search for his love. Hannah’s father, however, remains steadfastly convinced of her sinful behavior. His blindness to his family’s pain extends to her sister, Sarah, who shows signs of increasing instability.

Convinced her former life is irreparably destroyed, Hannah finds purpose and solace in life with her aunt and in a growing friendship with Englischer Martin Palmer. Will the countless opportunities in her new life persuade Hannah that her place is amongst the Englischers— or will she give in to her heart’s call to return home and face her past?

As the coldest winter on record blows into Sugarcreek, will three hearts have the courage to discover the life that God wants for them?

In the small Amish town of Sugarcreek, Ohio, Joshua knows what’s expected of him: to work at the family store and to finally marry Gretta, whom he’s courted for years. But when a new English family moves in next door—and their teenage daughter catches his eye—Joshua wonders if his future plans are too firmly set in stone.

Gretta is shocked by the sudden change in Joshua. Their arguments followed by tense silences feel too much like the frosty atmosphere at home between her parents. When Roland begins to take an interest in her, she considers what her life might be like with Joshua out of the picture. With Roland, Gretta would have steady, kind companionship…although she knows she could never love him.

When Lilly moved to Sugarcreek, she never imagined she’d be enamored with the Amish way of life—and especially with her handsome new neighbor, Joshua. But she guards a secret that will surely drive him away, one that compelled her family to leave their old home and move to Sugarcreek in the first place: Lilly is pregnant.

I think they all sound good too! I think I may as well break down and start a TBR list.

I’ve been to Ohio, but not Holmes County. While in the Kirtland area, we went to an Amish restaurant and it was great. The food was filling and the people were friendly and nice.

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

I’m a little concerned that Amish food may be a little too rich for me. At least based on my Amish romance reading.

I’m not familiar with the Beachy Amish, that term that is new to me. The part of New York I was born in has lots of Old Order Amish, though more are adjusting to “English” ways of doing things. The part of Ontario I live in has a high population of Mennonites, and they are a very diverse group.

Amish have a lot of diversity. Each ordinug has their own rules about how much modern stuff they’ll let in. Plus there are the different denominations of Amish. Beach Amish are more progressive.

I would love to take a road trip to Holmes County but I’m in NC and my husband wouldn’t want to join me for this!🤦‍♀️😁Maybe I could tempt him and tell him they have homemade beef jerky! I used to live in Indiana, very close to Shipshewana. Some Amish there, but mostly Mennonites live there. I wish I could go back!💜💜

I think I could convince my sister to go with me to Holmes County. The husband is a definite no, plus he always stays home with the cats. They’ve never had a sitter before and don’t take well to strangers. There are some Amish communities here in Missouri I’ve yet to visit. Part of me really wants to go because I love my Amish romances so much and the other part of me says they’re just people and I shouldn’t be disrespectful. Maybe I’m reading too much into it.
