Ten Confessions of a Book Lover

There are many things in life that I’ve needed to confess. I’m not perfect, after all. Some of those things are only to God, others to my therapist, and then, of course, there have been family members. This week, I’m going to confess to you, bookish folks of the internet, some of my deepest, darkest secrets. About books. If you want to know other things, you’ll need to hang outside my therapist’s office door. That place is not soundproof.

I judge books by their covers. I know that this is not that uncommon, but since I seldom read a book description, it really limits my choices. Kathleen Fuller is one of my favorite authors, and she has a book coming out on December 3rd, but I dislike the cover so much that it is keeping me from being as excited as normal about it. To top it off, this is a very popular book cover style now, so there are tons of books that I’m not reading simply because of that. If Fuller wasn’t a favorite author, I wouldn’t be reading this book.

I rarely buy books. There was a time in my life when I purchased books all the time, but I don’t like to keep them, so I stopped. I’m a library and NetGalley girl. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. If I just can’t get it from either of those resources, and I really want to read it, I’ll buy it.

I don’t have a bookshelf. Well, technically I do, but only one row is filled with cookbooks. The rest of the shelf? Mostly… stuff. Cat-related stuff, to be precise. Oh, there’s a book called I Could Pee on This on it, but since it’s a cat book, it falls into a gray area. Also, there’s a Harry Potter wand. That’s about as bookish as it gets around here.

I don’t read classics. Especially Jane Austin. I want to read classics. But I can’t get through them. Okay, Little Women I can read. Over and over. And that’s it. Of course, at my age what’s considered a classic may be different now. So maybe I do read classics…let’s just say I don’t. With the one exception.

I am a super slow reader. I get distracted by anything and everything, even if it’s a great book. If I manage to read more than one book in a week, you can bet one of them was a five-star read because I. Just. Can’t. Plus, I have a job that takes up 40 hours of my week. That makes it sound like I don’t like my job, but I do! I just don’t want to work for anyone. But that’s a whole different (and non-bookish) post. And then there’s knitting. So, yeah, not a lot of time for reading.

I won’t read a book and watch the show or movie. It’s one or the other for me. If I’ve seen the movie or show, it’s like reading the last paragraph of the book firstβ€”no thank you. Books are so good that I don’t want someone else’s interpretation to mess with my mental imagery. s usual, there’s one exception: Harry Potter.

I avoid long books. Maybe I’m wrong, but in my mind, β€œlong” equates to β€œintellectual,” and that’s not what I’m looking for. I like to keep things lighthearted. So for me, 350 pages is about my max, unless it’s a collection of short stories.

I went to Earnest Hemingway’s house only for the cats. I’ve never read any of his books and can’t even name a single oneβ€”not even after I just included a picture of one above. But if you want to see tons of pictures of his homeβ€”with cats prominently featuredβ€”I’ve got those in spades.

I check out books from the library and don’t read them. This happens a lot with nonfiction. Since I judge books by their covers, I pick them up, start reading, and then find out they’re just not for me. Not so bad if it’s an e-book, but I’m talking about books that my library had shipped from another location. This is why I’ve given up on nonfiction for now. Besides, there’s not a self-help book out there that’s helped me so far. That’s why I have a therapist.

I do not have a TBR list. Unless you count my NetGalley approvals that I haven’t read yet. If it’s by a favorite author, it’ll get read eventually. For everything else, I either check it out from the library right away if I’m interested or assume I’ll stumble across it later when I need a new read.

I’m sure there are more confessions, like the fact that I don’t know all the bookish acronyms people use in posts. Sometimes, I’m clueless or lost about what’s going onβ€”except for TBR; I’ve got that one down.

What are your bookish confessions?
Can you help me out with the bookish vernacular?

I don’t buy a lot of books either – most of what I read comes from the library, NetGalley, or directly from the publisher. I love highlighting our public libraries, and never realized how lucky we are to have them until I learned that in some other countries, libraries work differently or just aren’t there.

I didn’t realize that public libraries are not like ours until a reader commented recently. What’s sad is we have such good and wonderful libraries and not nearly enough people utilize them. You don’t even have to go there to get a card or benefit from the library anymore either!

Yes! I’ve always loved the library but I truly appreciate having access to them after learning that other countries don’t have public libraries that work the same.

I do the same thing at the library! All of my holds come in at the same time. Then I only read one or two of the books and go back on the waitlist for all the others.

I have been pretty good this week. I only have two holds and I just picked up one yesterday. I’m just not sure when I’ll get to it. Hopefully soon.

I love reading everybody’s confessions this week because it just shows that there is no one “right” way to be a reader. You don’t have to buy books to read them. You don’t have to read classics to be a reader. You don’t have to have a TBR, etc.

I love that you do what you like to do! It’s very encouraging :)

I also quit buying books many years ago. I figure the library is much better suited to storing books than I am. On the rare occasions that I do buy a book, I give it away as soon as I finish it.

I feel like a terrible librarian when I say this, but I frequently choose to watch the show or movie over reading the book. I justify it by saying there are too many books that aren’t made into shows, so I need to save my reading time for those.

Terrific list! I really enjoyed reading all of it.

Great perspective on both! Whether I watch or read something really just depends on which I Stu,bled on first. I will admit that I watched the first episode of Bridgerton and didn’t like it. I went ahead and read the entire series. It was okay but there are much better historical romance authors out there. N
But in general it’s just happenstance on which I pick.

      Thanks for reading!

I think not finishing books you’re not interested in is totally valid! It’s nice to be curious and try things, but it’d suck to have to finish things all the time.

I say that, but I usually finish everything I start, just in case the good bit is right around the corner, heh.

Awesome list of “confessions.” I love clever, pretty covers, but I rarely browse so I don’t really judge a book by its cover. I hate how so many covers these days are derivative of popular book covers.

I’m a big fan of the library, but I still buy books and have an Audible account.

I love my bookshelves–cannot imagine not having them! They are my main decor item :)

I usually don’t watch an adaptation of a book, but sometimes I do and then am disappointed.

I love big books, and I cannot lie!

And, Hemingway’s house with cats in on my must-visit list.

    Happy reading!

This topic has been so interesting to me. It’s fun to see how my reading habits compare/contrast with other bloggers’. Yours and mine are VERY different. I love owning books and have lots of large (very full) bookshelves in my house. I use the library and e-books a lot, too, but I just love owning books. It makes me happy :)

    Happy TTT!

One thing I realized I didn’t mention about the covers is that it’s not just the artwork, it’s the authors name. If I don’t know the author but I like the aesthetic and it’s a USA Today bestselling author then it’s a yes. That’s literally my criteria for picking up a book. So sad but it works!

I want to read Classics and have a few on my shelves that I *might* get to someday, but they are not for me either. Although, I did enjoy Little Women. I keep a TBR so I have options. For so many years I was part of library systems that didn’t have great collections, so I would add them to my TBR so I would know to look for them later. I love the library and we have a great system now. I don’t feel guilty when I check out books and don’t get to them. I just check them out again later, if nothing else, it is keeping the books in circulation. I have found quite a few nonfiction books to enjoy, whereas I didn’t use to read it at all. Have a great week!

It’s great to hear your library system is improving. TBRs feel like too much pressure to me. I guess I’m just not a list person.

And, of course, Little Women. The writing style just feels more modern to me so it’s easy to get through.

I don’t read classics either. I think I’ve read one Austen book (and tried to finish Northanger Abbey but didn’t) and one L.M. Montgomery novel (though I would like to read the ‘Anne’ books). Oh, and I guess I did read some Narnia books too which I loved! But percentage wise, I read next to no classics. I’m a slow reader too and while I buy books I’ve gotten better at the number I buy. ;) Thanks for visiting my list today!
