Author Interview: Pamela Desmond Wright on An Amish Widow’s Hope

I am so excited to share today’s post because I am welcoming Pamela Desmond Wright to the blog for an author interview. I don’t think it’s a secret that Amish romance is my favorite romance genre, and Pamela’s stories consistently deliver the kind of faith, heart, and emotional depth that keep me turning pages. We are talking about her upcoming release An Amish Widow’s Hope, which I have already read and loved, but since my full review is already live, this post goes beyond the story itself. In this conversation, we are also digging into Pamela’s writing process, her experience as a writer, and giving you a chance to get to know her better behind the scenes.

Pamela Desmond Wright grew up in a small dusty Texas town, and from the time she learned to read, books have been her passion. A veteran of the e book revolution of the late nineties, Pamela moved into traditional publishing and later took a break from writing in 2013. Unable to shake the story bug, she came back in 2019 with a new focus, fulfilling a promise to write wholesome books readers of all ages could enjoy. She currently writes Amish romance for Harlequin Love Inspired, crafting heartfelt stories where characters face life’s challenges with courage and grace, and no matter how difficult the journey, they always find hope and healing through the power of faith and love.

CB: What part of the writing process brings you the most joy as an author, and why?

PDW: For me, the part of writing that brings the most joy is putting together the bones of a story—the characters, the plot, and all the little pieces that make it work. I love seeing the characters come to life in my mind, developing their own personalities and little tics. It’s fun to watch how they grow and interact as the story takes shape, and there’s something really satisfying about seeing all the pieces click together into a full book.

CB: How does your faith influence your writing?

PDW: My beliefs deeply shapes the heart of my writing. It guides the values, hope, and resilience I try to weave into my stories, even when characters face hardship or loss. I love showing how ordinary people can find strength, grace, and moments of joy through faith, without preaching—just letting the story reflect the quiet ways belief can sustain and inspire

CB: As a Christian author, you have many meaningful ways to weave faith into a clean, wholesome romance. What is it about Amish stories in particular that draws you to write within that community and tradition?

PDW: I’m drawn to Amish stories because they offer a beautiful glimpse into a life rooted in faith, family, and community. I love the simplicity of their traditions—the way daily life is grounded in purpose, devotion, and meaningful connections. There’s a gentle rhythm to their world that allows the heart and relationships to take center stage, which makes it a perfect backdrop for clean, wholesome romance. Writing within this community gives me the opportunity to explore love, hope, and faith in a way that feels timeless and deeply uplifting.

CB: I enjoy Amish romances for so many reasons, the step away from our fast-paced English world is one of the biggest reasons for me. Why do you think readers enjoy Amish romances?

PDW: I believe it is the chance to step away from our fast-paced world. In a society filled with crisis and uncertainty, there’s something deeply comforting about the sense of safety these books offer. They allow readers to slow down, breathe, and experience a world where faith, family, and love take center stage.

CB: Let’s talk about your latest release, An Amish Widow’s Hope. This book is packed with so much, including second-chance romance, finding faith under fire, and calling and purpose. I could go on, but I don’t want to spoil it for readers. How did you decide which struggles and triumphs to focus on in this story?

PDW: Honestly, I didn’t set out to pick specific struggles or triumphs. The characters just spoke to me. I listened, followed where their story led, and tried to bring their journey to life on the page. It’s always amazing to see how their challenges and victories unfold naturally.

CB: Your portrayal of a progressive Amish community felt unique. What research or experiences helped you shape this version of Amish life?

PDW: I intensively research everything that goes into my books. If I can’t verify that it actually happens in an Amish community—through articles, books or photos—it doesn’t go into my stories. There are so many different kinds of communities with varying rules and permissions that a writer can pretty much cobble together a fictional community using these elements and still stay within the bounds of realism.

CB: Did any of Isla or Evan’s characteristics surprise you as you began to shape their personalities?

PDW: Absolutely. I didn’t know Sheriff Miller had a drinking problem until I began to write his story. The same went for his deceased sibling and the reasons Evan left—it all unfolded naturally as the characters came on stage and told me their story. I’m always surprised by what they reveal once I’m ready to write; sometimes they have whole layers I never anticipated.

CB: This book had so many suspenseful elements—I was blown away by the ending! What inspired you to incorporate that level of suspense, and do you see yourself exploring suspense more deeply in future projects, maybe even in a line like Love Inspired Suspense?

PDW: Sheriff Miller’s story finally got its turn, and I couldn’t resist turning up the suspense and action. He’s been in the background for four books, so this was my chance to tie everything together and give readers some thrills. Plus, I’ve had a bit of a hankering to write for Love Inspired Suspense. I’d love to explore suspense more in future projects, so who knows—time will tell!

CB:  Your upcoming releases are focused on the Humble Blessings series. Is the Texas Amish Brides series complete?

PDW: For now, the Texas Amish Brides series wraps up with An Amish Widow’s Hope, though I’ve got a spin-off in the works—tentatively titled Burr Oak Blessings—that will follow some background characters from the first four Schroder sisters’ books. Readers have often asked about characters like Mary and Benjamin (from Bonding Over the Amish Baby), so I thought it would be fun to explore their stories… if my editor agrees!

As for Humble Blessings, that series will conclude with its four books and won’t continue beyond them.

CB: What do you hope readers carry with them after finishing one of your books?

PDW: I hope readers carry a little bit of joy and happiness with them after finishing one of my books, along with the comforting reminder that God can do amazing things—even during challenges. If my stories can bring a smile, a sense of hope, or a moment of peace, then I’ve done my job.

What a fun interview with Pamela. I could just talk Amish books all day! But, given that she was so gracious as to give me this time, I went easy on her. If after reading this interview you aren’t quite convinced to read An Amish Widow’s Hope, you can read my review. I also enjoyed hearing about Pamela’s creative process and how she brings her faith into her work. Writing is a ministry, and Pamela gave us such a wonderful glimpse into how that takes shape for her. What a gift to get to do this interview!
