Regrets from the past
could lead to a chance for redemption…

After a terrifying break-in, widowed dressmaker Isla Stohl finds herself leaning on town sheriff Evan Miller. Sixteen years ago, Evan chose a law enforcement career over her and their Texas Amish community, and now he’s determined to make amends. Evan vows to keep Isla and her two children safe, but old feelings begin to arise once more. As he’s drawn back to his heritage and faith, he must decide if he can leave behind the life he built for himself in the Englisch world for the woman he’s never been able to let go of.

My Thoughts on This Story

This book was amazing! I could not step away and found myself sneaking time to read it whenever I could. The ending was shocking and really edged this book into the fringes of suspense.

What I Loved About These Characters

Isla’s tremendous faith, despite facing blow after blow, is inspirational. After so many things kept happening to her, she was left nearly destitute with two small children. This is an example that many of us could use. But she did have her struggles! Especially when it came to her growing feelings for Evan. He was now an Englisher. But I suppose the heart wants what the heart wants.

Evan is a character to love. His desire to help others in the English world through law enforcement is strong. In some ways, it is not far removed from his upbringing in the Amish community, which emphasized helping others within the community. The way they go about it is entirely different.

Amish Life Details in This Story

I enjoyed the fact that this is a more progressive Amish community. Some did have cell phones for emergencies or work. The Bishop is open to discussing non-traditional careers within the Amish community. Even if those careers require education beyond the eighth grade.

Why You Might Enjoy This Book

Obviously, if you love Amish romance, this is a must-read. You should also pick this one up if you enjoy romance and a touch of suspense (whether you read Amish romance or not). You won’t want to put it down!

Rating: 5 out of 5.

A Peek at My Week

This week I’m:

  • Reading: No More Boring Bible Study by Faith Womack. I need to decide on a fiction book, as I’ve just finished one. Probably another Christmas read.
  • Working on:
    • Book reviews
    • Author Interview questions
  • Family snapshot: Georgie is getting bigger. He’s seven pounds now! I took him to the vet last week because he has the stinkiest breath ever. There’s nothing wrong with his teeth; he just has stinky breath. It’s a good thing he’s so darn cute otherwise, or I wouldn’t let him keep licking my face.
  • Bible Banter: Working through a New Testament Overview class through Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary’s Go! Online program.

What have you read recently? Any fun plans?

In some instances, I receive complimentary copies through the publisher, author, or NetGalley. This is marked next to “Source”. This in no way sways my opinion. All opinions are my own.
