Author Q&A
CB: Jorgia, I’m so excited to have the opportunity to conduct this interview. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.
Yates: Hi! I’m so thrilled to be here! Thank you for having me.
CB: Your books feature protective heroes and courageous heroines in high-stakes situations. What draws you to writing Christian Romantic Suspense, and what do you love most about this genre?
Yates: Even as an early reader, I loved mysteries, detective stories, and suspense. There was something so exciting about not knowing what would happen on the next page.
When I got older, I discovered books that combined romance and suspense, and I was hooked! It wasn’t until I read my first Irene Hannon book that I realized there were Christian Romantic Suspense books too. I loved how there was an extra layer that just seemed to make my heart burn with hope.
CB: Collision Course explores faith in the midst of danger, trauma, and sacrifice. How do you approach writing about faith in high-intensity situations without losing its emotional depth?
Yates: Wow. That’s a fantastic question. I’m going to be completely honest and say one of the biggest worries I had when writing Collision Course was that I wouldn’t do justice to the real men and women who sacrifice everything for their countries.
I have my own experiences with PTSD, but to add authenticity, I spent countless hours watching heart-wrenching stories of actual female vets who are now desperately trying to heal from the trauma they’ve suffered. It was with those precious women, and the child victims of terror in mind, that I poured their pain and their shattered hopes onto the page.
CB: Reese is torn between his duty as a Federal Air Marshal and his love for Verity. What inspired this storyline, and how do you hope readers connect with his internal struggle?
Yates: The idea for this story was originally conceived due to my enjoyment of the show Burn Notice and the will-they-won’t-they romance between two main characters, but it soon morphed into something far deeper as God took control.
While in Collision Course events conspire so Reese must choose between his wife’s well-being and his stressful career, it soon became apparent I was writing an action-packed version of my own story!
Our very personal battle to hold our family together became firmly embedded into the plot, so I hope readers can connect with Reese’s struggle to prioritize family over career and Verity’s stubborn refusal to let him foolishly tear apart what God has joined together.
CB: Amnesia adds an intriguing dynamic to Reese and Verity’s relationship. How did you research and develop this aspect of the story to make it feel authentic?
Yates: I spent a lot of time reading about amnesia and did my best to make Verity’s condition believable. I also used some of my own neurological experiences and what I witnessed with my beloved Grandpa’s memory loss after the first of his three strokes.
It’s a tricky one though, unlike Reese’s injury where I could seek clear advice, the brain is so wonderfully complex that there are always going to be cases that don’t fit the mold. That and Verity’s earlier trauma allowed me a little wiggle room with her symptoms.
CB: Collision Course deals with intense topics like PTSD, terrorism, and trauma. What challenges did you face in balancing realism with a hopeful, faith-centered message?
Yates: Great question!
While researching the darker aspects of this book (not recommended by the way) I got a glimpse into how evil claws its way into men’s souls until they are lost in their wickedness.
It’s given me a better understanding of what Paul meant when he said, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ephesians 6:12.
The challenge was to show that Reese was playing right into the enemy’s hands by trying to fight a supernatural battle and protect his wife using natural resources.
Hopefully, I’ve been able to show that while Satan is at work in the world, God is ready to fight all our battles for us and that we need only to be still. Exodus 14:14.
CB: How can readers best support you—whether through prayer, encouragement, or sharing your work?
Yates: All of the above! But if I had to pick one, I’d say I’d appreciate prayers that I keep my eyes fixed on Jesus.
As an author, it’s too easy to get wrapped up in sales, likes, reviews, etc., but if I’m not pleasing God and encouraging other believers, all of that is meaningless, right
CB: Once again, thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to give the audience a little glimpse of you and your book.
Yates: Thank you so much for having me for writing such engaging questions.
Much love,
Jorgia XX
